Release: FreePlay64 for iOS

I have just released “FreePlay64” on my Temporary Repository (Link Below).

FreePlay64 is an App available from my Cydia repository that will install 31 Games into the Commodore 64 App for iOS.

These games are actually already located in the C64 Directory, this utility will extract and install each game as they were originally designed to be played, unmodified. I may decided to release a modified package with full Keyboard support in the future if there’s enough interest in such.

I will release these as individual packages soon for those of you that don’t want to install all of them.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you delete and re-install the Commodore 64 App before installing this package to avoid any conflicts or errors. Once you have re-installed C64, just tap the “FreePlay64” Icon on your springboard and once it finishes the installation it will automatically close and then you may safely remove the “FreePlay64” icon from your screen if using Cydelete, or via Cydia > Manage > Packages > FreePlay64.

I have quite a few projects going at the moment so be sure to follow me on Twitter for updates when those are released. I’m working on other emulators and apps as well.

Details: I’m doing some much needed updating and maintenance on my official Cydia repository, so until further notice the above repository will contain all future releases.

Please install it via Cydia.
You can click HERE if browsing on your iOS Device.

NO Jailbreak?
Download iPhone Explorer (PC & MAC): http://www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/
(Thanks to JeFurry for pointing out that non-jailbroken users can install packages using the above software.)

Step 1.
Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to your PC or Mac and launch iPhone Explorer (Download link posted above).

Step 2.
Select your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch from the list and goto Apps > C64 > C64.app
You will see a series of files ending in .zip like this “com.manomio.C64.airwolf.zip”.
Drag and Drop all of the .zip files to a location on your PC or Mac, and extract them all.

Step 3.
Inside the extracted zip files folders you will find another .zip file.
Example: “airwolf.zip” and a .sign file “airwolf.sign”. (You can delete the .sign file.)

Extract this .zip file and you will see two folders inside.
Example: Airwolf & Images
Copy all images in the images folder to the other folder (Airwolf in this example).

Step 4.
Now copy the other folder (Airwolf in this example) to the “games” folder in Apps > C64 > C64.app/.

Step 5.
Open up the C64 app and your new game will appear. Else you did something wrong or the app was running in the background (Reboot).

Slight problem – it’s only downloadable via Cydia. And if you’re a jailbroken user, that’s great… but if you’re not, like me, you can’t actually download the games in the first place. I’ve explored the repo via http, but can’t find a file download outside of Cydia.

Can you give a direct download link to a ZIP file of the games? Then, like the tester pack, I can verify the installation works without a jailbreak… I’ll even write up the steps for you properly so you can post ’em without further work. 🙂

haha, actually I just never finished it.
I was trying to link the repo file to the post so I didn’t have to manage two separate files, but alas I think I don’t have a choice, and after some thought, it makes more sense to just put a guide up.

Sorry for the sloppy directions, I ran out of time, I’ll clean them up later 😛

We’re going round in circles here. I don’t need to be told how to install the games – I know that. If you recall, it was me who told you this in response to your sampler pack posted a while ago.

The problem is that the file (containing the pack of games) apparently cannot be downloaded unless you’re running cydia. If you’re not running cydia (which I’m not because my iPhone isn’t jailbroken) you cannot download it, therefore the following instructions are meaningless. That’s what I said in my first message. I browsed the cydia repo via a web browser, but could not find any way of downloading it.

Can you please provide a link to the games as a normal ZIP download? Even link directly to the files on the Cydia server, that would be fine too. But as I can’t get the file, I can’t do anything else at all – and neither can any other non-jailbroken users.

    I’ll explain.

If I recall correctly Apple now requires all content to be included in the App download, including in App Purchases. So in App Purchases are simply “Unlocking” hidden files & features.

Therefore all of the games made available for in App Purchasing are already on your device and merely need to be extracted, organized and placed into the proper directory in order to work.

FreePlay64 automated this process, no games are included in the package.

Ah, I see! That explains it all – I was completely misunderstanding. I thought you were talking about a downloadable game pack, such as the sampler pack you recently released (which I was able to get going without a jailbreak, using iPhone explorer).

But you weren’t – you were talking about unlocking the games already included within the 64 emulator.

I’m so sorry – I got the wrong end of the stick. My fault entirely, because your post above does actually say that.

If you do ever release a game pack, like the sampler you did before, I’ll try that out.

    Apologies again.

      No worries 🙂

I’ve been extra busy lately, haven’t even had time off to enjoy the nice summer weather >.< but I do plan on releasing more packs.

Btw – the FreePlay64 app only works if you have certain utility libraries installed. I had to install IFile. I take it it needed Unzip?

    Yes, it does require “unzip”.
I thought I took care of that, but obviously not, so I’ll see what I can do.
Thanks for the heads up =)
